Speaker 2:I wanted to introduce a friend of mine, Ryan and us . Ryan, welcome to the studio
Speaker 3:And thank you. It's, it's gorgeous <laugh> . I
Speaker 2:Love it. This is a professional sits right in outfit. You can see we spent a lot of no, no expense spared, you know, with our , uh, studio here. Ryan and I have known each other for, gosh, at least 10 plus years I would say. Yeah. And , um, you know, he's huge . All worked
Speaker 1:Together.
Speaker 2:Yeah. We working , uh, as a , he was my main circulating nurse. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> . And then , um, you know, then we all kind of went different places and we found each other again in some other hospitals. And then everywhere I go it's like a cold sweat that couldn't go away. <laugh>, I'm back. He , he's , he's back. Keeps coming back and so, and then he's telling me a little bit about what he's doing that's not related to our day-to-day grind of medicine and operating and everything. And so I thought it would be perfect for the radio show. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> . And so you can tell us a little bit about a T X holistic hub, if you can. Yeah .

Speaker 3:About it. Uh , thank you. It's basically your holistic hub. I'm dropping knowledge for everything from mindset to nutrition and trying to put it all in one place from people. It's a lot of , uh, research and it's a lot of inspirational mindset topics, but , uh, a strong background in nutrition. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> for food as the medicine is the underlying factor there.
Speaker 2:So people use the word functional medicine. Um, I don't know what that means. Uh , tell me a little bit more. Why, what's the function? What are we talking about here?
Speaker 3:For me, it's a holistic function, looking at the body as an entire ecosystem where we can only really, you can't really focus on just the liver because the kidneys are affected or the brain's affected or the gut's affected. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> . So understanding more of the interplay and how basically everything comes down to metabolic functions, cellular dysfunction, and then it just kind of manifests in whatever organ or body system. But you start correcting it at a cellular level with nutrition, then the body tends to heal itself.
Speaker 2:You know, people get very myopic about this . Say, I I I have this low T problem and it's, or that it's diabetes that runs in my family and I use a line that, no , it's because nobody runs in your family. You need to actually do something. You get off your bottom <laugh> and go actually exercise and then think about, you know, to your point about food and, and , and what that does. 'cause I mean, it is what we are, you know?
Speaker 3:Absolutely. I mean our, our minerals literally come from the sun from the stars. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> Adam smashed and created a , some new pieces on the periodic table and that's what we all life needs for, you know, keep living.
Speaker 2:We're getting molecular 11, right ? We're we're getting like the periodic table. I wish I had it in here. I could be. Alright . Real quick. What's periodic element number 35? No, I'm kidding. Oh , I would've failed that. We're all , we're all, we're all having PT bacon . Is it bacon? You said bacon? No , it's one of my favorites .
Speaker 1:It's , so tell us about food as medicine. 'cause we've had a , a previous functional medicine provider on in the past who used to work with us . Raffa Ula . And she spoke about food as medicine all the time. And I'm fascinated with this idea. So it's basically what you put in your body.
Speaker 3:Yeah. It's um, to my understanding now, it's less about calories in , calories out as more about mineral content. You have your , a lot of people don't even understand your electrolytes are minerals or macro minerals intracellular inside your cell . Your main two are magnesium and potassium and they have a negative ionic charge. And then you , outside of your cell you have , uh, sodium and calcium, the main macro minerals that are electrolytes. Those get outta balance then disease happens.
Speaker 2:Hmm . Alright . So who, who's gonna come see you like a chemist or <laugh> ? Um , 'cause you know , my daughter wants to be a TA for chemistry next year. Who , uh, whose electrolytes need to be balanced more. What is your ideal patient that you think about?
Speaker 3:I mean, anyone who's looking to take back control of their health and has a chronic condition. That could be anything from I B Ss to , uh, fatigue. It's just trying to understand how to eat better. You have to unlearn a lot of our cultural programming to understand that whole food is the medicine and a lot of our processed food, all of our processed food is pretty much trash and it's gonna make you sick in the long run. And if you don't pay for food now you're gonna pay for hospital bills later. Ooh , that's true .
Speaker 2:So, so what do you eat, Brian ? I mean, you've lost some weight. You look like you're healthy, you know, and you got a six pack . I know 'cause you're always showing it on Facebook. But go ahead, tell me what, I should never go to any kind of fast food food now
Speaker 1:You're always showing it on Facebook .
Speaker 3:This weird juice. This weird juice that I have sitting right here.
Speaker 2:Yeah . What is that
Speaker 3:Juice ? Yeah, that's, that's actually a radish mixed green spinach , uh, frozen , uh, organic berries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries. Um, there's cayenne crushed red pepper, salt, potassium from cream of tartar, which is pure potassium. Okay, wow . Um, and a little bit of a beet and a little bit of a carrot and a whole squeezed lemon. And I drink that daily. Wow .
Speaker 2:And you made this yourself
Speaker 3:In a blender
Speaker 2:With individual elements . You did not buy it at uh , some whole foods or something. Correct.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Are you feeling bad about the diet Coke you drank earlier? Dr. J ?
Speaker 2:No, I go full Coke <laugh> Dr. Pepper. Are you kidding me? No ,
Speaker 3:That's my hangover cure.
Speaker 2:I'm thinking about all the beers that I've had, but I naturally made them and imported 'em in my own mouth . Oh, okay. Um, so, so again, I mean, how do you test for these electrolytes? You do lab tests or what , what is kinda the workup that you do to find out what, what's going on with my imbalances?
Speaker 3:It's an intake form. I need detailed information about your diet, about your sleep habits, about your morning routine. Do you get on your phone instantly? Uh, 'cause it's also about stress. Stress plays such a huge important role in how much minerals your body uses when your endocrine system, your hypothalamus, thous , these things that make your emotions, your hormones. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> take so much energy to make that burns minerals. So if you're already eating bad fuel and then you have a ton of stress, you're burning the candle at both ends. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> .
Speaker 2:Right. Well, if you have no time, frankly I'm not gonna, I dunno how you do it then. I mean, I'm rushing to get to the operating room in the morning and you're, you're doing the same. And it's like, who's got time for this carrot stuff? You know, make it the night before, I guess
Speaker 3:We're gonna make it . Yeah, I Exactly, I I make it , uh, when I come home and it put it in the fridge and just take it right outta the fridge in the morning. I bet
Speaker 1:He's more disciplined than we are with our food decisions. Oh, well
Speaker 2:I bet <laugh> , <laugh> , I , you know, the , the go home, what are we eating? I don't know what's what there ,
Speaker 3:Let's forget our Whataburger. I still enjoy. It's all about moderation, right ? Oh , good . Just like con since consistency with anything. Yeah. Just like working out. The first time you went and loaded up a barbell and did a squat, it was hard and you were sore. Right. Um, fasting or learning how to eat more nutritionally dense food is consistency. It takes practice. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> and it , the more someone does it, the easier it's gonna be in the long term . That goes with any skill really in life. So learning how to eat this way is no different. So
Speaker 2:I've gotta think most of this is not so much lab testing as much as it is just really getting to know the person that you got in front of you to say, okay, what do you do? What are you eating? And then just really correcting all that stuff. Whereas, you know, we have our health coach in our office, we certainly supplement that with labs. Is there something, I mean, obviously the , you know, we want to be less stressed and mm-hmm . <affirmative> , you know, richer and all these great things. Yeah . But I've gotta think at some point it's a programming gonna put somebody on a certain dietary product and and maybe do you adjust it for the patient , uh, to, to what they wanna do?
Speaker 3:Absolutely. There's , uh, what
Speaker 2:They can do, you know?
Speaker 3:Yeah. There's nuance to everyone and that's kind of the trick of being a good , uh, practitioner, provider or even salesman is understanding who you're talking to, what resonates with them. Do I need to explain diet or stress from a more scientific standpoint or do I need to explain it from a more mindset yoga, you know, breath work standpoint. It's just how to, what resonates with that person? And that's kind of this overarching project for Holistic Hub is, I don't have all the answers, but I'm gonna get you to baseline and we'll wait on doing labs because chances are you're stressed out and that can affect your lab values, redox proxy, and then you're not eating right. So let's get you to baseline for a month or two and then see if there's still a problem. If there's still a problem, then yeah, I outsource and go to whatever modality or practitioner resonates with them. And that's, that's the network that I've been building for many years.
Speaker 2:What about , um, like cancer patients? We certainly see those challenges. Um, you know, when something is actively mm-hmm . You know , cannibalizing you in a way and, and everything is completely , uh, is there, have you had experience with , uh, certain prostate cancer or kidney cancer or anything that really does a number on our end from , for our listeners?
Speaker 3:Uh , yeah. I'm currently working with a patient who has prostate cancer. Just did his first round of chemo. Um, but we completely turned his labs around in a month. He was now taken mind, he was already very healthy. We just augmented what his diet was and cut out a little bit more and added some more minerals through , um, Shila , which is like a plant-based tar that has 84 carbon bound minerals in it. And what does that mean? Carbon melon means bioavailable. It's naturally occurring, so your body's able to use it instantly. It doesn't have to change it to be able to use it like a , a synthetic or a processed food. What
